The primary design directive for this Shell Beach, California residence was that every room must have a natural light source. Given the lot size constraints and the need for flexibility in the floor plan, the residence “folds” in on itself, creating a courtyard that floods the space with natural light and views of vegetation. The floor plan is flexible; the rear wing can be closed off with a movable wall to create a separate, fully contained living unit. The second living room is designed to be partitioned into a fourth bedroom as needed. Vegetation surrounds the perimeter of the lower-level fence, so when fully opened, the distinction between interior and exterior spaces becomes indistinguishable.
